Windows Media Player 10

Why does the Update for Windows Media Player 10 say "NOTE: This update
applies to US clients only."? (XP SP2 thoughtfully uninstalled Windows
Media Player 9)

"XP SP2 thoughtfully uninstalled Windows Media Player 9"

Actually, that's not correct. In fact, WMP 9 is part of SP 2 and is
installed on all clients running an earlier version of WMP. If WMP 10 is on
your computer, it's because you installed it.

Note that, unlike with earlier versions, WMP 10 can be uninstalled through
Add or Remove Programs. I haven't uninstalled it myself, but my guess would
be, if you SP 2, that uninstalling WMP 10 brings you back to WMP 9.

Are you sure about the un-install feature? I thought that the web site
advises to have a current "systen restore" point, because MP 10 can't be
uninstalled? My system does not have the entry in add/remove. Is there a
newer version out then 10.00.00.3646?

It's correct enough. SP2 removed the icon, and clicking on Windows Media
Player in Start>Programs brought up the installation wizard (for WMP 9).
Note that I was asking about the Windows Update for downloading and
installing WMP 10, which says "NOTE: This update applies to US clients
only". The answer I was given was to go to the Microsoft website and
download from there, which didn't seem to answer the question - at any level
really.

Go figure. I'm not in the U.S.and didn't have any problems at all. Good
question though, why only U.S. residents?
Anyone........

John it may simply have been added to the website during the early public
release. I'm not sure it may only have been released in the US initially.
Microsoft may simply have forgotten to remove the 'this update applies to US
clients only' from the web site. It may also have been a US legal
requirement at the time. Either way my original answer stands. Just download
it from the site address I provided in my original post.

Here's a funny - and true - story about my experience getting WMP 10 from
Windows Update. I clicked on the 'Details' link to find more information,
and I was presented with a window written in both English and French. Some
lines were in English and some were in French.

U.S. residents only? Hmmm.

I live outside of the US and I installed it. I did not install it from
Windows Update as it was not available to me through there (and still isn't
on my other computer which is stock at WMP9). When I did install it, I found
out that I cannot use the "new" features tied into the onlime music stores.
It tells me that there are no stores for my location. There are a few stores
for US, one for France, and one from Korea from memory. Nowhere on the pages
that I downloaded from said it was US only.
