thanks very much

Buy a new computer, you need it, since ME is very old.

Other options download adaware, but it will not actively protect you.

"ME is very old"

ME: 2000
Windows 2000: 2000
XP: 2001

They're *all* old.

Age has little to do with whether MSAS is supported on a
platform...it runs on XP. ME is based on DOS/W98.

Your ME computer will probably run XP, use the upgrade
compatibility test which can be downloaded from MS, is on
the XP CDs, or run the on-line test at www.pcpitstop.com

I wholeheartedly agree Jim. Besides, XP SP2 is not very
old - 2004!! That was almost a complete operating system
within itself!! My kingdom for the days of DOS and BASIC,
when life was so uncomplicated.

Stu scribbled:

"My kingdom for the days of DOS and BASIC, when life was so uncomplicated."

Walterius responded:

"...And computers could do so little."

However, I do treasure the fact that my dual boot W2K/WME system has DOS. I
actually DO stuff in DOS. And it *is* simple.

I actually worked on a TRASH-80 for a while, and the first computer I
programmed professionally had 30,000 vacuum tubes (two duplexed computers
required plus 10% spares = 2 * 30,000 + 6,000 = 66,000 tubes) and spoke only
assembler. Wow. Whoopee.

:)

Old familiar faces that you understand are always hard to
abandon. But XP will run, trouble-free, the BSOD becomes a
thing of the past and a new Dell can cost less than the cost
of a SDRAM 64 MB stick just a few years ago.

I want a new Dell, but I don't have the $300, and I don't want to invest in
a lame duck OS. Sob. Yet, my Athlon is getting a bit long in the tooth.
Weep. I am confused. And broke.

Win2K has *never* given me a BSOD, by the way. (It has hung a few times, I
admit.)

W2K is based on NT, just as is XP. XP just has a newer GUI.

I'm broke too, understand your pain. Nothing wrong with
W2K, if it works for you;stick with it. So do as I do, I
get my exercise by walking and bending over for coins found
on the ground.

It will cost you about $100 to buy an XP upgrade (home) and
that money would be better spent on a $300 Dell [with XP
installed] a 2.4 GHz CPU.

And Walterius scribed:

Darned right. That's my plan. But no Celerons!

Now if I can just talk my roommate into buying one first so I can see how I
like $300 Dell computers.... Gee, I can remember when a Dell cost $4,000....

The wonders of mass production and amortization.

BTW, nothing wrong with a Celeron if all you do is surf the
web and email. Someday I'll replace my 1.7 GHz Celeron 478
with a 2.8-3.2 GHz P4, if I don't replace the whole system
first.
I don't play games and I'm using dial-up, so the 1.7 Celeron
keeps me happy and it was the least expensive thing when I
built this computer[$82 vs. $300 for the CPU]. I planned
for growth, but haven't needed the upgrade yet.

My eldest son wanted a computer for email, surfing and eBay,
on my suggestion he bought a Dell 2400 with a 2.4 Celeron
and a 120 GB drive, a CD-RW and a DVD. It came with 256 MB
RAM, but he bought a 512 stick and is running 768 MB. He
has been very happy with the performance. It is very quite
in operation too.

Change that to two 60-gig HDDs, a DVD-R and 1 Gig RAM, and I'll send my $300
immediately. Chirp. :)
