Brand new computer -- with new and improved Vista -- promises of fun and
ease of use are really more accurately defined as frustration and
dysfunctional. I use "gmail" via "pop3". Always worked fine, and still does
on my other computer, using outlook express. I copied all the configuration
data from OLE to WM. It has never worked beyond giving me the following
error messages:

The host 'smtp.gmail.com' could not be found. Please verify that you have
entered the server name correctly.

Subject 'test', Account: '(e-mail address removed)' <mailto:'(e-mail address removed)'>,
Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): No, Socket
Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: '(e-mail address removed)' <mailto:'(e-mail address removed)'>, Server:
'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F

Naturally, my attempt to send this with the new and improved Vista --
failed. DUHHH !! Kinda like picking up your phone to call the phone company
to tell them your phone doesn't work. So I copied all of this onto my old
computer -----the one with the old, but functional OLE----and WA-LA!! it
works.

Windows Mail could not post your message. Subject 'windows mail', Account:
'Microsoft Communities', Server: 'msnews.microsoft.com', Protocol: NNTP,
Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

Hope someone can help Bob

It may be worth double checking that gmail is enabled

but another likely area of concern is AV software.
If you are using the incompatible McAfee or Norton
uninstall them immediately and replace with a free, compatible,
alternative such as Avast or AVG.
Ensure email scanning is disabled and try again.

Do not install the email scanning component.
