Windows Mail - problems with incorrect messages displayed / messag

I've drawn a blank trying to resolve this problem on the
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums and have been recommended to try a
more technical forum. I hope someone can offer advice. Below are the initial
problem statement and my response to one of the suggestions made. Thanks in
advance for any help anyone can offer.

I use Windows Mail on Vista Home and have today discovered a problem whereby
when I tried to open a mail item in a sub folder the mail item that opened
was a different one in the list. I then created a new folder and tried to
copy across some of the mails to that folder. I got an error message to the
effect that the transfer wasn't successful (I didn't note exactly what it
said) and noted that some of the mail items had disappeared from the original
folder but didn't appear in the new folder. I then moved a couple more -
apparently successfully - but noticed that a number of the e-mails in the
first folder now showed as "Messages not found".

I can see that all the actual messages still exist - and if I copy one of
the messages to another folder I can open it correctly but if I try to save
it back into a Windows Mail folder (through the 'copy to folder' command in
the mail viewer window) the message appears in the Windows Mail folder but
when I try to open it I get the incorrect message again.

I presume this is an indexing error of some sort but I can't identify any
recent change that might have caused it. Is there any way to re-index the
mail or otherwise to correct this problem? I don't want the hassle of
changing to another Mail programme (e.g. Windows Live Mail) as was
recommended to someone else with a similar problem if there is a
straighforward fix.

Following advice on a different forum I tried to export my mail out of
windows Mail to Outlook.

I tried exporting all the mail - to Outlook 2002 - which I used before
moving to Vista. The folder with the corruption (I've only noticed one though
I guess there may be more) had 27 messages in it. 17 of those come up in
Windoes Mail as "Message not found" when I try to open them. The other 10 all
come up as one or other of two messages. Only these 10 messages get
transferred to Outlook - but not the original e-mails - only the two that
display in Windows Mail!

I've now tried exporting and re-importing the messages in the folder in
Windows Mail - but no change. I've just lost a few more of the .eml files
through trying to move them between folders! I have all the original message
files backed up - I've tried restoring from the backup but I used the Vista
backup utility which is selective about what file types it backs up and
can't have backed up all the necessary system files as I can't import from
the backup.

The only way I can see at the moment to get the message files back into my
Windows Mail is to copy the .eml files to a different location (they won't
open correctly in their normal location), then open them and forward them to
my e-mail address so they come in as new messages. This may be possible with
the small number I think are affected - but if there are other folders
affected it may be impractical. In any case it's not a good work around -
there must be some way to reindex the database?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I now find that exporting and reimporting from WM does seem to work. It looks
like there was corruption on the particular folder. I have deleted that
folder and the messages are now indexed correctly - touch wood!
