I suddenly cannot get mail and get the following error messages:
An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C0148.
and
An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: POP3, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C0148

The use of port 0 usually indicates you have interference from an antivirus
program. Also, the server names are missing from your error messages,
so we can't tell if the server names were set wrong.

What if any antivirus programs do you have? What servers are you
using for your email account? Who is your email provider (probably
the same as your internet provider?

Anti virus is Norton. I have read other listings which talk about the fix you
recommended in my other post, and some possible root cause being the AV
stuff. I have tried the 32 bit version but am still getting the 2 errors
listed. will now try the 64 bit version

Tried 64 bit and it is not valid for this PC.
Also set outgoing and incoming mail settings to needing secure servers but
still no better
getting frustrated and wondering if I need to take pc back to supplier?

One of the two won't install, but which one depends on which version
of Vista you have.

Looks like you need to get instructions from your email provider (who
is probably also your internet provider) for setting up to use their
email servers. If they haven't written instructions for Windows Mail
yet, use their instructions for Outlook Express but under Windows
Mail instead. The instructions are probably somewhere on their web
site. Or, you could tell us who your email provider is and see if anyone
here already knows where to find the instructions.

You may also have to uninstall the Norton program, not just disable it.

You may then want to download and install an antivirus program that
works well with Windows Mail. I'd suggest either avast! or AVG,
either one with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that
scans email:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff

I've also seen NOD32 recommended for businesses:

This problem is almost certainly caused by your antivirus.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee and Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, NOT just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

OK so now I am really puzzled. I have uninstalled Norton AV, disabled the
windows firewall, checked the port settings for POP3 and SMTP and they are
correct, rang my pc providers helpline and they were next to useless and I
still cannot get any emails.
I still get the following messages:
An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C0148
and
An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: POP3, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800C0148
and I have nothing displayed in my Inbox.

Email is still working fine on my old pc with the same settings but in
Outlook.
Any other ideas.

The use of port 0 without an antivirus program that intercepts it seldom
works.

Although, perhaps you are getting an error before it looks up the port
number, so it can't show the right port number. It doesn't seem to have
looked up the server names correctly, either.

You may need to delete your email account under Windows Mail
and then create it again to get rid of the lingering effects of your old
antivirus program.

As Robert already advised you, you need to delete the account that was
corrupted by NAV, restart WM, then recreate the account.

I think I may have cracked this problem for those who use McAfee. Like many
others I have been seeing the error message(s) and having trouble downloading
mail, but no solution I could find on the net seemed to work. By trial and
error I have discovered the following solution:

1. Use MSCongig to turn off McAfee Spam Killer in startup
2. Restart
3. Check in Task Manager that MSMail is not running. If it is end the
process.
4. Run WMUtil (http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/Default.aspx) and run the repair
database.
5. Restart

All should now be fine. My PC is.

Gool luck everyone.
