Windows Mail Message Rules Disappear

I set color-coded message rules for the various types of emails. Never had
any problem with it before I reinstalled back to Dell Factory Settings the
end of June, and then I also purchased and installed BitDefender Internet
Security 2008 after that.

I set up five color-coded rules. Without fail, every time I boot my computer
two of the rules are still there and three of them are gone. Rule #1 is just
for my email friends and that one seems to always stay in place. Of the four
that remain, one is always there and it changes as to which one, and the
other three are gone. When I started today I had rules #1 and #4. I recreated
2-3-5 and then had to restart after a download and when I went back into my
email rules #1 and #3 were there, the others gone.

Can anyone help with this?

Your BitDefender may be interfering with saving the message rules to
the registry. Are there settings in BitDefender that allow you to
a) turn off any interaction between it and emails, and
b) turn off any protection for altering the registry?

If all else fails, do a trial uninstall of BitDefender, reboot, and test
Windows Mail again. If it makes no difference, I assume you can
always reinstall BitDefender.

First, in the email I received letting me know of this response there was a
link that said "Read and rate the response." I clicked on that link several
times and it just took me to a blank page.

I'm not very knowledgeable on a technical level, but I will take a look at
the settings and see if I can find anything. I'll get back to you if I come
up with anything.

Thanks for responding.

It's tough to be such a technical dummy! I had a Dell tech on my computer
last night through that GoGetAssist deal to help me out with a little
permissions problem. I told him about my problem with the inbox email rules
and he checked things out for me. He told me this was not due to BitDefender,
but was due to an update from Microsoft because they had discovered a
vulnerability that could be used through these rules. It didn't make any
sense to me because why would any of the rules be retained if this were the
case? As I said before, usually 2 of my 5 rules would be left, and there were
actually two remaining when this Dell tech went into my email. If this
so-called update really targeted the rules then common sense tells me you
shouldn't be able to set up a rule at all.

Today when I opened my email all the rules were gone. So I opened
BitDefender and unselected the Antispam protection. I then re-set 5 new
rules. Since doing so I have restarted twice and my rules have remained. So
when it comes to my email I've decided trust the filters provided by my ISP
and my own common sense so I can have my rules.

Just wanted to let you know how it came out.

Thanks -- until next time.

Thanks for your feedback. Third party security programs can cause strange
symptoms in Windows Mail. Good to hear you found the module in
BitDefender that was causing the trouble.
