Windows Mail lists messages that don't exist

Windows Mail (Vista) contains six messages in the Junk E-mail folder that are
not really there. Looking in the Local Folders > Junk E-mail folder, there
is a file called winmail.fol and one email message that is not listed by
Windows Mail.

How can I fix this problem?
 
When I try to install it, I get a message saying the update doesn't apply to
my system. Any other suggestions?
 
Have you tried both the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version? One of them
should refuse to install, depending on which version of Vista you have.
 
Assuming you didn't try to install the 64-bit version of that fix on a 32-bit
Vista system (or vice versa), it sounds like you have a different problem
than what that fix was designed to cover.

In case of intractable Windows Mail problems, I always advise people to
upgrade to the newer (and better) email program:
