Lost important mail in junk e-mail folder. Can I retrieve it?

I lost an important e-mail that had been directed to my junk e-mail folder.
It's happended a few times recently. In the past I could open my junk mail
folder, read the post and close the folder without losing the junk mail. In
other words I had to actively delete messages in my junk mail folder. My
mail reader OE does not work that way any more. Now if I open a message in
my junk mail folder it disappears it disappears if I close the folder. I've
also noticed a red circle-slash on the icon for my junk e-mail folder. Is
there anyway I can retrieve my lost e-mails?
The message was sent via my POP mail (comcast.net) but they don't show the
message in my comcast mailbox after they've been forwarded. What can I do to
retrieve the e-mails that have disappeared? I have to admit I am not as
savvy as I should be when it comes to technical stuff.

Each mail folder has its own 'current view' setting. Perhaps your Junk
folder was inadvertently set to "Hide Read Messages.
Open the Junk E-mail folder, then change your 'current view' to
"Show All Messages".

i tried that before and everything was set correctly, but I tried it again,
and still see it is set up correctly. I'm sure the message is gone from the
junk e-mail folder. I'm wondering if there's some way to find it again. Any
other suggestions.
Thanks

If the message can't be found in either Junk E-mail, or the Deleted Items
folder, and both folders are set for "Show All Messages", then it sounds
like that missing message is gone for good.

If you remember some key phrase that was in that message, click the
Start button and execute a search from Vista's "Start Search" bar.
