Windows Mail displays white space instead of message body

OK - I understand what you're saying.

Just wondering though... if I go through the above list of links and am able
to rule out spyware/hijackware, is there any other advice that you (or anyone
else) is likely to be able to give on this issue? Or have we pretty much
reached the end of the road when it comes to known possible causes of my
problem?

Hi again,

Further to your message above, I have now done a full scan with MSRT and
it
reports that no malicious software was found.

Is there some clue in what I have previously said that makes you fairly
sure
this problem is nonetheless caused by hijackware?

PA Bear said:
1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

But since this problem doesn't affect other user accounts on the PC,
it
must
be something to do with my account (perhaps/probably the Registry?).

Changing to a different application doesn't sound to me like it is
really
getting to the root of the problem, which I would quite like to do,

I
thought maybe someone on this forum might at least be able to point me
in
the right direction on this one? For example, thinking about both the
filesystem and the Registry, how can I totally reset everything
related
to
Windows Mail?

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.

If WMUtil was not effective in fixing the problem, about the only
thing
left
is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

message Hi there,

I have happily been using Windows Mail in Vista (SP2) for a number
of
weeks now, but suddenly it has started behaving rather strangely, in
that
it has stopped displaying the message body of ANY e-mail (from 2
different IMAP accounts and 1 POP account).

I have tried all the obvious things:

1) Logging out/in and rebooting.
2) Compacting/repairing the Windows Mail database using WMUtil.
3) Trashing my Windows Mail profile and starting from scratch - but
even
with a completely fresh profile the default "Welcome to Windows
Mail"
e-mail that gets put in your inbox wouldn't display.

Just to clarify, the message headers display fine, but the message
body
does not - not even if you double-click a message to open it in its
own
window, and not even if you Reply or Forward to the message.

As I said this is a problem affecting all e-mail across 3 different
e-mail
accounts (and even the default "Welcome to Windows Mail" message in
a
fresh WM profile).

Any idea at all what is wrong here?

I have the same problem and I have Avast, tried to rebuild from the ground
up, deleted a ton of files, tried to upgrade to Windows Live Mail and I till
can't see anything in the body of the email in either Windows Mail or Windows
Live Mail. It is hung up somewhere because it always says "not resonding" as
well. When it comes back around, still no body of the message. I can't even
get a header to come up in Windows Mail and I cannot open the attached txt
file in Windows Live. HELP!

Sounds like your computer has major corruption, or perhaps even a
virus or malware. You may need to reinstall Vista.

K

kennethmac2000

Just as an update to the above, the problem has now fixed itself without me
doing anything more.

Windows Updates are being installed all the time on my PC, and the only
thing I can assume right now is that one update broke Windows Mail and a
subsequent one fixed it again.

I wanted to note that the symptom he is describing is 100% identical to my
problem as well "Cannot view downloaded emails". Sadly, I was left hanging
and told to "purse other diagnostics to determine the cause(s) of the problem"

It sounds like we have a slightly more common problem, at least.

G

Gary VanderMolen

Just like a medical doctor, for the tough diagnoses about all you can do
is rule out other possibilities one by one.

M

Mantari

And what works for one patient might just work for another. I just posted
this to my thread:

I found an explanation. I ran Spybot's main program. It told me that I had
over 67,000 temporary files, and asked me if I wanted to clean them up. So I
did. (It didn't say the actual path of the temp directory.) After that,
Windows Mail worked without problem.

I do highly suspect, though, that Windows Mail had a hand in creating all of
these temporary files in the first place, then started to choke and
eventually was unable to read messages at all.

G

Gary VanderMolen

We've had some users experience the problem very shortly after a
fresh Vista + IE8 install, long before there were many temporary files.
Cleaning out temporary files does give temporary relief for the attachments
problem. Your problem will return in a day or two.
