Windows Mail - cannot receive or send

This morning Vista Home did an automatic update. Since then I cannot access
or send email. The message is

"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'mail.btinternet.com',
Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

I have done a system restore but to no avail. The mail worked fine before. I
have tried turning off email scanning from Norton but that does not seem to
make any difference.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

I am having the same problem. I just started a new job and they are trying to
set me up e-mail with Windows Mail and have it connect to their server. I was
able to send two e-mails, but when people responded I did not receive them.
What should I do?

Norton antivirus is not compatible with Windows Mail.
Many users have posted here with reports saying that no relief
was obtained until they completely uninstalled Norton.
The same goes for McAfee.

Can you send an email to yourself and does it arrive?
Any error message when you click on the Send/Recv button?
Does it go through the motions of contacting the server?

I've been in this business a long time. Most mail problems
are due to user errors.

You could do that. Or you could attempt to get help here
by describing your issue clearly and in detail.

1. Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident program.
Beside that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail.

2. Are you sure those are the correct settings for BTImtermet? Check their
Web page and use the instructions for Outlook Express.

I too have had the same problem after the automatic update of Vista Home.
Not only was I unable to access my emails, but I was also unable to access
the internet - I wasn't even able to access my router. I think that the
problem lies with 2 of the updates - KB933566 for Internet Explorer and
KB929123 for Windows Mail. I uninstalled both updates and was then able to
access my emails and use the internet normally. I then reinstalled both
updates and the problem returned. I have now uninstalled these updates
again and have set them as hidden updates to prevent this problem again.

Thank you Dwarf :)

After uninstalling update KB929123, windows mail was able to connect again !

Remark : while the update KB929123 was uninstalled, I got an error message
from Norton...

If you have Norton or McAfee uninstall them.

The turning off of the e-mail scanning and removing and adding the account
didn't help. How do I uninstall Norton?
