Windows Mail asking for username /password

M

MarciDave

I use Windows Mail and have had no trouble until now. When I try to access
my email, a window appears asking for my username and password. After I type
in the correct info, the same window appears and asks for username and
password, again and again without allowing me to send or receive email. What
is going on and how can I resolve this issue?

Thanks!

Some email servers insist that you enter your username with no spaces and no
CAPITAL LETTERS. Some insist that you follow it with the part of your
email address that starts with @, and some insist that you don't. Many
insist
that CAPITAL LETTERS in your password aren't the same as the matching
lowercase letters. With any of these problems, the error messages returned
by the server seldom tell you which problem they found.

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not compatible
with Windows Mail.

Symantec 10. if it is not compatible with Windows Mail, why does it case the
problem immediately?

Thanks

I, too, called my internet service provider, who also passed the buck to
Windows. I can use the internet-based email, so it's not an issue with the
actual username and password (capitals/spacing).

This is also happening using Outlook Express on my desktop (I am currently
using Windows mail on my laptop). Both systems are using different
anti-software.

Probably due to Symantec's rather odd idea of what compatible with
Vista means. Their Norton line of antivirus programs has been
causing problems with email programs starting even before Vista
was available. At least the Norton line usually takes a while to cause
problems in Windows Mail, often until it tries to block an incoming
virus. The parts of their Norton programs that cause problems in
Windows Mail aren't disabled when the rest of the program is disabled,
and often fail to be uninstalled when you try to uninstall the Norton
program. It isn't yet clear if they copied the problem causing parts
of the Norton antivirus program to any other antivirus program they
offer without the Norton name on it.

McAfee - But, it hasn't been changed. Could it be a virus?

Most versions of the McAfee antivirus program seem to be worse at
causing problems in Windows Mail than most viruses are, although
the problems it causes seldom show up immediately. Just disabling
part or all of the McAfee program seldom helps; you usually have to
uninstall it instead. You then often have to run this cleanup program
to take care of what the uninstall leaves behind:

<http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type=TS&ia=1>

You may even have to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.

If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems with Windows Mail.
Most versions of the Norton antivirus program and a recent
version of the Trend antivirus program are bad choices; they
also cause problems in Windows Mail. I recommend either avast!
or AVG, either one with a custom install where you tell it to leave
out the part that scans email.

Try this test - switch off your McAfee/Norton/whatever and see if the
problem persists.

If suddenly everything works fine, then welcome to my world! (see my
thread 'here'

So if downloading the suggested free anti-virus programs *is *the
answer, but you *still *have to turn off incoming email scan, I ask
again. What is the point of having anti-virus that doesn't check
incoming emails for nasties?????

Can someone please explain?

For problems caused by a Norton, McAfee, or Trend antivirus
program, just disabling part or all of the program seldom helps.
You usually have to uninstall the program instead, and for Norton
and McAfee, you often then need to run a cleanup program to
take care of what the uninstall leaves behind.

For some other antivirus programs, the program needs a custom
install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email. For yet
other antivirus programs, just leaving the option to scan email
turned off is enough.

When this type of problem occurs, the first attempt at a fix should be
deleting that mail account, restarting the email program, then
recreating the account. Mail accounts can get corrupted for no
apparent reason, although the most usual cause is antivirus mail
scanning.

Gray,

typping mistake Case=> cause
Is that issue relate to Microsoft or Antivirus supplier? Which one I can get
help for patch?

Thanks

"Case the problem"? What does that mean?
As a minimum, you must disable email scanning in your
antivirus. If the problem continues, the only way to rule out
the antivirus as the culprit is to uninstall it. Follow up with
Symantec's garbage removal tool:

You can always reinstall it if you want.

Symantec will deny that a problem exists. Microsoft won't
help you, saying it is Symantec's problem.
Your choices are to change out your antivirus for one that
is more compatible (we can recommend some good free ones),
or else upgrade Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail:

I recently had the same problem with the message asking for my username and
password for each mail account that I have as it was checking for new mail
(sending/receiving). Come to find out, my passwords had mysteriously
disappeared - all my other account info was still there. After re-typing my
password on each mail account it worked again. I still have not figured out
what caused the passwords to disappear. This has happened twice since
receiving the Junk Mail Update from Windows. Additionally, all my Windows
Live Messenger accounts are removed whenever this happens. I have yet to
find the cause or answer. I simply re-enter the passwords in Windows Mail on
each mail account and then re-enter my Live Messenger Accts.
