Keeps Asking for Gmail Username and Password

Lori

My windows mail was working fine. Now it keeps asking for my username and
password. I know it is correct and when I enter it, it asks for it again. If
I press cancel it gives me this error.

Account: 'gmail', Server: 'pop.gmail.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response:
'-ERR [AUTH] Username and password not accepted.', Port: 995, Secure(SSL):
Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Sounds like the account is corrupted, possibly by a non-compatible antivirus.
Which antivirus are you running? Be sure to turn off its email scanning.

Try this. Delete that mail account. Restart Windows Mail, then recreate the
account. Does that help?

You do realize that recreating a corrupted account is only a temporary stopgap?

Yes I am a former Adelphia customer. I use the CA Security system that they
provide. I can get into the webmail thru roadrunner just fine. I've checked
and double ck'd everything and can't find the problem.

Did you leave the username blank, as the error message suggests? I don't
think I've seen any email servers that accept blank usernames, and few
of them even accept usernames with spaces in them.

See if this helps:

When you enter the username, is it just the part of your RoadRunner
email address before the @ symbol? All lower case?

It depends on which tab of the account properties. The General tab
requires the complete email address, while the Servers tab requires
just the username portion.

The only other suggestion I have is to delete that account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate the account. Sometimes accounts get
corrupted for no apparent reason.

Here is the solution for this problem

close all mail clients you're using to read Gmail messages. (If you
use one at work and one at home, please disable both.)
From the computer on which your logins are failing, visit
http://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
Enter your Gmail username and password, and the letters in the
distorted picture.
Once you have successfully logged in, restart your mail client and try
to download your mail.
