in windows mail, vista 32 bit, when I go to open an attachment I keep getting
a message that powerpoint can't read it. How can I change / what do I change
to be able to read/view the attachment?

thank you in advance!

Is the attachment in fact a PowerPoint document?
Can you save the attachment and open it outside of Windows Mail?

I'm having the same problem & read previous posts on the subject so I went
to the winhelponline... site suggested by MS-MVP's but the fix didn't work
for me. I can view them if I save them to a file but should be able to open
without that process. Please see my post asking for help on 5/16/09 when
t-4-2 tried to help me. I'm on a laptop if that makes any difference. But no
matter what I do---I can't get to the \shell\Show part of it. In my registry
editor I get listings like this: .pps, .ppsm, .ppsx, .ppt, .pptm, .pptx. So
..pps is powerpoint. slideshow.11 & when I expand it all I get is Persistent
Handler. t-4-2 desspite his best efforts got stumped. Will 1 of you MVP's
try to help? It would be lovely if you could!
Is the attachment in fact a PowerPoint document?
Can you save the attachment and open it outside of Windows Mail?

Dies the error message really say that PowerPoint could not *READ* the
attachment?

Pls be so kind as to report the error message *EXACTLY*

Hi. tryingtolearn here---the message I get reads EXACTLY: This file does not
have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the Set Associations control panel.

Rainald, I already tried that before posting for help. Posted for help
BECAUSE that didn't work. Here's what happens: I go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT &
expand it, get to .pps which indicates it is PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.11,
I expand that and get Persistent Handler ONLY---there is NO Shell OR Show.
I'm on a laptop if that makes any difference. I did post on 5/16/09
subject:Winhelponline fix did not work. t-4-2 tried to help me out at that
time but got stumped & that's when I added my bit to this thread. I could
REALLY use some help. Thank you. Ann (tryingtolearn)

Sorry, you did not follow the recipe exactly. You looked at the wrong
place.
Nobody told you to go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.pps
Therefore the first step would be: print out the article.

The recipe clearly says:
* HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.11 *

That's far deeper down.
You may navigate by searching in the Registry "Edit | Find"

Then expand the branch by clicking in the triangle arrow in front of the
item and repeat expanding for "shell".
Then follow the rest of the recipe.

In case in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.11\shell
you don't see the key "Open" this would mean that you don't have
installed
the version 11 (2003) of the PowerPointViewer.
So continue with * HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPointViewer.SlideShow.12 *
I'm on a laptop if that makes any difference.

No it does not matter at all which kind if computer.
I did post on 5/16/09 subject:Winhelponline fix
did not work. t-4-2 tried to help me out at that time but got stumped

I checked the thread (after some searching: it started in May *17*, not
16th <!>)
Although t-4-2 had posted a screenshot, you obviously looked at the
wring place (PPS).

Hope it's a bit more clear now

P.S. As you seem to have the old PPTViewer (v. 11 /2003) you might
upgrade to v. 12 (2007). It's available for download in the MS Office
website.
Make sure to download both, the Viewer 2007 and the Service Pack for it.

Hi Rainald. When i went in there I had PPTViewer 11 AND PPTViewer 12 both.
So I don't need to upgrede? Right? Now, how would I determine I have the
service pack for 12? Ann

If you have v. 12 (2007) installed, v. 11 (2003) is just obsolete. You
may uninstall it via Control Panel | Programs and Functions.
Now, how would I determine I have the service pack for 12?

This can be seen from the date of Ppptview.exe.
The basic version is from Oct 26, 2006, file version 12.0.4518.1014.
If SP1 has been added the date would be Aug 29, 2007, file version
12.06.6211.1000.

Two ways to determine:
a) Open a PPT wir PPS file with the viewer, press the F1 key to open the
Help, then click on the "Info" button.

b) In the Explorer navigate to
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\PPTVIEW.EXE
Position the cursor over the file and see info in the yellow "speedtip"
balloon-bubble.

If SP1 is not yet installed, you can download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID

Hi Rainald. I greatly appreciate your instructions. Despite many attempts
with Options a & b, I was unable to execute said instructions. In Option a:
I did not get an info. button--only the following options: 1) View the
ReadMe File & 2) About the Power Point Viewer. Neither of which has an info.
button. In Option b: I never got a yellow "speedtip" balloon bubble. I feel
I'm missing something very simple (or more complex--like a brain cell).
However.... I think I found a way to answer the question anyway. I went to
Windows Update then View Update History where I found that both PPV 2007 SP1
& SP2 have been installed on my computer. Am I correct then to assume I
don't need to do so myself? Once again I'm in your debt. Thank you. I
remain---trying to learn---Ann

De nada. That's what we are here for.

Did you click on the "About ..." button?
It could be that I use a wrong term. My system and the PPTViewer speak
German.
In Option b: I never
got a yellow "speedtip" balloon bubble. I feel I'm missing something

I'm sorry, the color of the balloon bubble in the Explorer is not
yellow, it's light grey-blue (it's yellow in my Total Commander and
mixed that).
The speedtip should always appear when any file is marked and one then
"hovers" with the mouse over a file (there is a little delay).
In case you do not get the "balloon bubbles" at all, there might be a
wrong setting.
To change that, do the following:
- in case you do not have the classical menu-bar enabled, click the
Alt-key; this will show the menu-bar[1] ;
- in the men-bar click on "Tools";
- select "Folder Options";
- in the "Folder options"-dialog select "View";
- scroll down in the Listbox, in the middle if the lost you'll see an
item "Show up popup information for elements in folders and on the
desktop" (the wording could be a different, it's my translation);
- activate this option.
However.... I think
I found a way to answer the question anyway. I went to Windows Update
then View Update History where I found that both PPV 2007 SP1 & SP2

Interesting. You were already more advanced than Me. I did not yet have
SP2 installed!
But when running Windows Update it was on the list of available update.
It's installing right now ;-)
Am I correct then to assume I don't need to do so myself?

Right! You also have the latest and the greatest.

So all seems to be fine.
As said you might uninstall v. 11 (2003). It does not do any harm but is
just obsolete.

All the best

[1] To make the menu-bar persistent (I for one do not want to work
without):
Click in the "Organize" button and in the context menu select "Layout >
Menubar"

Yes, but that is no reason not to acknowledge the help provided.

Did you click on the "About ..." button?
It could be that I use a wrong term. My system and the PPTViewer speak

Yes, I did. and it did come up with a file # but it was 12.0.6502 which was
way off from what should have been the # for either PPTV 11 or 12 so it
threw me & I thought I must be looking in the wrong place. I now think the
differing file version # must have something to do with the SP2 update????
I'm sorry, the color of the balloon bubble in the Explorer is not

Ah, you see, I was taking things far too litteral. There was/is a blue/grey
rectangle. I thought it was probably the same thing in essence but since I
had made the mistake of assuming something similar when I was in the
Registry Editor previously...... I was now taking great pains to be exact.

The speedtip should always appear when any file is marked and one then
"hovers" with the mouse over a file (there is a little delay).

It does, so I think I'm good to go. But, I do appreciate your anticipation
that I may need to know how to change it! I may very well have needed the
instruction.

To change that, do the following:
- in case you do not have the classical menu-bar enabled, click the

little temporary fixes but the glitches always returned. I un-installed IE8

With IE8 everything works fine, except opening attachments. I'm one of
those who hit bitten by the IE8-WinMail bug :-( :-(

Which kind of "glitches" did you have?

I had 2 recurring glitches. Neither of these occurred before IE8 and since
uninstalling IE8 neither has occurred....these things happened ONLY during
IE8.
#1) In a received message with jpg attachment I would have to save the
attachment in order to view it. I did find a temporary "fix" for that
problem which was to go into Control Panel click Auto Play---in Pictures
drop down menu click it to change it to any other option then change it
back. That would fix the glitch for the next 2 or 3 times but then it would
always show back up again.
#2) Approx. 30 to 40% of the time Windows Mail would ask me for my user
name, email, and password before allowing me to perform any email functions.

I prefer my Windows Mail over my ISP's email. I like the way Windows looks &
operates. I don't like my ISP's version of email. I have not yet taken the
plunge to Windows Live Mail & am not sure I need to. I don't do IM or chat &
this is the only newsgroup I subscribe to so I'm not sure WLM would be of
any benefit to me.

I will say that I wasn't real thrilled with the way IE8 was presented to me.
I have my Windows Update set to check for update availability but let me
decide which ones I want. The IE8 was listed as an IMPORTANT update NOT as a
recommended update. I install the ones listed as important and try to
research the ones that are only recommended. I knew that IE8 HAD been beta
and understood that was along the lines of experimental. But when it showed
up listed as Important (I ASSUMED again ;-)) I assumed the kinks had been
worked out & went ahead & installed it. After I began having glitches, I
went to the view installed updates list & much to my surprise it was listed
there as a Recommended update NOT an Important update. To borrow a Brit
expression..."it was not very well done of MS" to sort of pull the switch
like
that. However, glitches aside, I did like it and wish the glitches weren't
there. Can't really explain why I liked it, it did seem faster but more than
that ...it "felt" good...you know?

Now, finally, I need to ask 1 more question. As I'm still struggling to
learn the terminology & what comes under what category, I'm trying to figure
out which group to post my next problem in. Can you point me in the right
direction please? About 20% of the time when I go to shut the laptop down,
it gets all the way down to just the background picture & I get a pop up
headed: explorer.exe saying a program is preventing your computer from
shutting down, then tells me instruction at ( a list of #'s) referenced
memory at (more #'s). The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate
the program. Gives me option to shut down now or cancel. I cancel, close the
pop up window & the icons on the left side of my screen re-load, then after
about a minute I can click shut down again and it shuts down. I'm worried
this is going to be a BIG problem. Do you suggest General Discussion posting
or Performance & Maint.?

Thank you for ALL your help,
Ann

Hello again Rainald,
So you too were bitten by the IE8-WinMail-bug which affects some (not
all) systems (all four of mine).

Not fun. Especially on 4 machines! :*-(
Strange. And this happened after installing IE8 and went away after
uninstalling it?

Exactly. Odd isn't it?
What do you mean by "my ISP's mail"? Is this a web-interface for mail?

My Internet Service Provider's email program. Last September it was
BellSouth who then became ATT & then they paired with Yahoo. Haven't cared
for any of the 3 email programs. It takes more steps to access than my
WinMail so is less convenient. Plus, to me, it isn't organized as well as
WinMail.

I for one do not like WLM at all. Installed it for testing and
uninstalled it.
In case I can not get WinMail going in the final version of Win7 I will
look some alternative mail- and news-client (possibly Thunderbird).

I did read some of your comments on the subject in some of the other
threads. Have a gut instinct I would end up doing the same as you.
