windows log on problem

This is strange. After much experimentation I've got my system to work,
but listen to this.

My windows XP only logs on properly if I set it up to stop and ask for a
password. I have to assign a password to the primary account, and use it.
If I don't do this the following happens: when I shut the computer off,
the icons clear, but the blue "windows is shutting down" screen never
appears, and the computer doesn't shut off. Then when I manually restart
the computer, I get a messege: "Windows log on failed".

Again, if set it up with a password, everything works fine. Any ideas
what's going on here?

Paul.

I recommend you choose a password, but you don't have to. Go to start/run, and type 'control userpasswords2' , Uncheck the password
option, and follow the wizard. This will log you on automatically, without asking for the password
