I recently tried to clean up some files on my laptop and it said it needed to
restart and when it did it came to the login windows screen. I entered my log
in and password and it said "the system could not log you on, Make sure you
user name and domain are correct then type your password again." It is not
giving me any choices of domain. I believe before this happened I went in to
take my log in info off because I am giving the computer to someone else and
wanted that information off. It said I was a workgroup and not sure what that
means but restarted quickly. I need to get into the computer to get word docs
off but nothing is working. I tried safe mode and it still asks for password
and does not work. PLEASE HELP!!

Hi Julie

Not sure what you mean by "I went in to take my log in info off". . .
What info, from where?

Try logging in as the built-in Administrator. If using XP Pro, type
Administrator in the name box and leave the password field blank (the
Administrator doesn't have a password by default). If using Home, you'll
need to go to Safe Mode before you can do this.

Good luck!

You've told the machine that it is a member of a domain but removed the
domain profile. Since you are giving the machine away, you should do a
clean install of Windows anyway. Make sure you give the recipient the
restore disks and any other disks for preinstalled software that came
with the laptop.

I have Windows xp pro and did try the administrator as user id and it still
does not work. Also when I try in safe mode it does the same thing. When I
said I went in and took out log in id and password it was apparently
somewhere I was not suppossed to be but I am at my wits end. it is like it is
hung up somewhere and will not accept anything.

Malke,
I believe that the problem you described is the one I'm experiencing
right now -
I accidentally changed my computer's domain to a workgroup so we could
share computers within the network.
Now, even in safe mode, I can't log in due to a "pre login error" from
Intel Pro/Wireless.

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

You need to log onto the machine with the local administrator account
and then rejoin the computer to the domain. You will need to be
connected to the domain when you do this and obviously you need to know
the local administrator password. If you are not a systems administrator
at your company, effectively this means that you need to take your
laptop in hand and go to your sysadmin and be very nice to him/her. They
will fix the situation and tell you how to use your home network
resources when you and the laptop are out of the office.
