Windows loads the black screen with the blue bar scrolling then goes to a blank off-black screen and

If I then switch the power off and restart in safe modes, it scrolls through commands and freezes on the line multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

I then inserted my windows XP disk and tried to boot from disk. It gives me two options: 1. windows xp setup 2. windows xp recovery console

I am afraid if I use option 1, it will erase the information currently there and option 2 works but i have no idea what ot do at the command prompt in do
