Black screen on boot. HELP NEEDED!

When my computer boots it seems like it's going all fine and dandy. The
windows screen comes up with the blue scrolling bar as usual, but when it
would normally go to the login page with the users and whatnot, it just
displays a black screen with my mouse pointer as the only thing on the
screen.

I tried all the safe modes and got the same problem, except it said "safe
mode" in all 4 corners and "microsoft windows XP buikd (i forget the numbers)
service pack 2" at the top.

The problem started after I transfered my parts into a new case. (i am
currently on a laptop as the problem computer wouldn't load windows).

In trying to fix this I took out my video card and put it back in, unpluged
my monitor and put it back in, and tried every option on the F8 menu.

I DO NOT have an original Windows XP disk, only the OEM repair/restore disk.

I DO NOT want to have to re-format my hard drive.

Thanks, Jon Long

oh also, could this just be a coincidence? When I turned my PC off to remove
the contents, it was the first time being turned off in about a week or so.
