Windows Live OneCare

I have installed (uninstalled and reinstalled) this one 3 times now.

The first time was on July 5th. That's the date that showed as the "up to
date as of ...." date.

It did not automatically update antivirus definitions. I tried the manual
update link

Baloon message read "Wondows Live OneCare is checking for updates." Then
another baloon message popped up:

"Windows Live OneCare could not check for updates. The update service is
not available."

After trying all suggestions, I uninstalled and reinstalled it. The date
now displayed as July 11, 2006. After several days, the date remained the
same. Clicking on the update link produced the same messages. I then asked
a friend of mine (beta tested this one) what the date was on hers. "July
19" she said.

So I uninstalled and reinstalled the program. Now the "up to date as of..."
date was July 19, 2006 and the Defender update date was July 11, 2006. A
day or so ago, that date changed to a later date. That's updating fine.
OneCare is not. I tried again clicking the manual update link and once
again, the same scenario. I haven't a clue why it's not updating. I have
the 90-day trial version. All other features seem to be working OK. The
virus definition update feature (auto and manual) seem to be dysfunctional.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how was the problem resolved? I
Have to know this.

Thank you
CB

Been there - done that. Did not find any viable solutions. Thanks for the link

thanks for the link - unfortunately, I just perused the messages there and really didn't find anything that would tell me WHY this feature is not updating like it should.

I run OneCare and Defender on a couple of my systems. OneCare should display
virus definitions as "up-to-date as of 7/23/06" and anti-spyware (Defewnder)
as "last updated 7/19/2006". The detailed Defender updates may be found
elsewhere in this forum.

How many different ways have you attempted to update Defender? Try
Defender's Help | About ... | Check for updates. Then try Windows Update.
But before you do either, you might search for "MSASCui.exe.manifest".
Delete the .manifest file, but NOT the ordinary executable. This cured a few
different problems a couple of months ago.

Scott -- I uninstalled and reinstalled OneCare this evening. The up-to-date as of -- IS July 23, 2006. Defender's update DATE is July 19, 2006. Defender updates correctly - no problems there. It's OneCare AV that was not updating (auto or manual). I have been to the FORUM and noticed several others encountered the same problem as I did. There were some "fixes" mentioned.

I filed a report to MS folks (help center) and we have been haggling back and forth about this issue. Sent the LOG report also. They couldn't find any logical reason for this behavior. At first I thought it was because I was running the 90-day trial version, but the support person assured me that this is not the case. So I'll see how the 7/23/06 version works and if it will update. I am going to let it run over the course of the week and see if it updates automatically. Then I will try the manual update and see if I still get that message. Thanks for the input

I've been running OneCare on maybe 25 machines or so and haven't seen any problem with antivirus definition updates. I have seen the firewall refuse to start, and normally my fix for that was to reinstall OneCare.

You should be able to get email support for the trial version--and it should perform exactly the same way as a paid version does.
