Windows Live mail and Outlook express is compacting messages

G

gandian

I hope you can get me to the right place, I had posted on the Windows Live
place
http://windowslivehelp.com/community/p/51348/211163.aspx#211163

the links given to me had the boxes on the left which do not pertain to my
issue.

I have windows live mail and outlook express keeps asking me about
compacting messages, so I let it so it quits bugging me, I close Windows live
mail when I do this.

Awhile back I had a terrible time getting Windows Live Mail to work again,
the MSN folks could help as far as switching back to MSN I did that
temporarily till I worked on the Windows Live Mail to work.

What programs are related here, MSN & OE, OE and Windows Live, I don't think
I should remove OE.

any help appreciated or send me a link to a forum like this where folks
answer you correctly

Are you still being asked to compact OE folders, or is that resolved? You
cannot remove OE. It is part of your OS. If you are not being asked to
compact anymore, I don't know what your question is exactly.

Yes OE is still asking me to compact messages, the Windows Live mail works.

Then the issue is with the registry counter that gives you the prompt after
100 closings of OE. It is being increased quicker than it should be and even
if you are /not/ using OE.

There is a growing number of programs and actions that may be causing this
after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following?

IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL
Windows {Desktop} Search
Mailwasher
Nero plug-in(s)

Opening EML files while OE is closed will also contribute to the registry
count.

Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if
they were running when you installed SP3.

Archived thread discussing this issue in June 2008:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...ss.general/browse_frm/thread/fcd35fbfa457fd6f

In the case of Windows Desktop Search, (the #1 offender), you have to tell
it to stop indexing OE.

Windows {Desktop} Search. Set Desktop Search Options:
http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/desktopsearch/search/options.mspx

In Windows {Desktop} Search: Control Panel | Indexing Options. Click: Modify
and clear the check box for Outlook Express.

In the case of Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 here.
ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero8/scout/NeroScout_Enu.pdf

In the option to exclude selected file types from indexing, be sure to add
these file types:

..eml, .dbx & .nws

If you don't use it, remove it. I have never had it, but I assume it will be
found in the Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

You're welcome again.

If you did this, you should be good to go.

In Windows {Desktop} Search: Control Panel | Indexing Options. Click: Modify
and clear the check box for Outlook Express.

(You /may/ be asked to compact one more time if the count was close to the
limit).

Hope that resolves it.

FYI: Since you post using the Web Interface, for the best help, ask your
Outlook Express questions here:

Outlook Express General newsgroup:
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...px?dg=microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general

And your Windows Live Mail questions here:

Windows Live Mail [Desktop] Newsgroup.
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...dg=microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

Good luck.
