Recently, I received an email informaing me that OE 6.0 support would be
fazed out and that I should switch over to Windows Live. I did that switch
and installed Windows Live. NOw I think my emails are stored in TWO sets,
(1) windows Live (2) OE 6.0 which is redundant.

I would like to get rid of the OE 6.0 if the support or developemnt is going
to be fazed out. BTW, I have XP with SP3. here are my questions:

1. Is my assumtion correct that now I have emails stored by WINDOWS LIVE
AND OE 6.0? and hence redunduncy?
2. Can one remove OE 6.0? I hear that it is an "Integral" part of MS Office
and hence creates issues with Outlook if removed.
3. If I can remove it, how? Is there a script developed by MS to do this
and make it easier on novices like me?

One MAJOR suugestion to MS (which I am sure will fall on deaf ears) that
before you introduce new stuff and ask people to move over, PLEAS consider
the impact of your actions and develop simple means to remove redunduncy.

First off, I'd be double-checking that you actually got the email from
Microsoft advising you of this. I have never received an unsolicited email
from them. Not saying it doesn't happen, just check to be sure.

Outlook is a part of Office, but can be removed easily. Outlook Express (not
the same thing) is not a part of Office, but a part of Windows itself. You
can remove it using Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components.
If you have saved any emails, then they would be on your hard drive, but the
emails themselves reside on your ISP's server. Little space is taken up by
the either program's data store.

I tried Live and hated it, so I uninstalled it and went back to OE. Windows
XP support will end, too, so if you move on to Vista or Win7, you'll be
getting a new mail client anyhow, so stick with what you like until that
time comes or is forced upon you.

To all posters: Microsoft is "phasing out" Hotmail / MSN "web" mail
access from within Outlook Express, this coming September.

Second, Outlook Express, not Outlook, is integral part of XP. It can
not be completely remove. If you have moved to Windows Live Mail,
delete the email account(s) and move the "emails" out of OE.

Once you have LIve working and are satisfied with it, just delete the
accounts that exist in Outlook Express and forget about it. If you
don't open OE, OE won't be downloading any e-mails, so you aren't
getting duplicate emails. If you read the mail with Live, that's where
it's stored, not in OE, and vice versa.
You can't remove it completely. You CAN use the install program to
remove it from the system, but ... you may not want to do that.
Manually and completely removing OE would also affect part of
Outlook, in case you use that.

Also: The fact that a program won't be "supported" anymore simply means
there will be no further updates for it and what you have is what you
got. Any bugs/problems left in it, which are very few indeed, will
never be fixed. Support for XP also stops in the next few years but
you'll find people still using it for a lot longer, just as you still
find people using win98 and even some with win95. Support ending has
absolutely nothing to do with the program starting to not work, so ...
if you prefer OE, go ahead with it. If you like Mail, then use LM.
It's totally up to you.

One more thing: Microsoft NEVER sends out e-mails telling people to use
such and such a program because one is not going to be supported
anymore. NEVER! If you received such an e-mail, it was either a hoax
or spam or scam.
Also, where did you download LM from? If it was NOT a Microsoft.com
site, then I'd be very quick about getting out your updated anti-virus
and anti-spyware programs and running everything you have looking for
malware.
Expecially if you clicked on any link in the e-mail to download the
program, it might LOOK like you went to microsoft, but chances are good
you were pirated away to some scammer or criminal's web site where they
are out to steal anything they can get their hands on from your hard
drive/s.
Such schemes are often used to place spies and keyloggers, disk spies
for passwords, bank names and all kinds of things in your machine. In
the extreme, they can even turn your machine into a Zombie that
participates in their activities which ends up with you unknowingly
assisting the spammer/scammer/bass turds.

I'm not trying to frighten you: I'm just trying to point out what can
and does happen to some people. Even if it did infect your machine,
AV and anti-spyware should be able to remove it. Assuming you have and
run such software and keep it updated.

Twayne`
