When double clicking .eml files they used to open in Outlook Express.
Since updating to the latest version of Msn Messenger they are now opened by
Windows live mail.

I don't want this!

Tried windowsexplorer > menu > tools > folder options

alter windows live for .eml files to Outlook express.
point to C:programme files\outlookexpress\msimn.exe

double click .eml file
Result Outlook opens BUT it doesn't display the selected .eml file

! Help please

So open Outhouse Distress and set it to be the default email client.
Also, open Internet Exploder and set OE to be the default under Programs
there.

Then why did you install Windows Live Mail (and Windows Live Photo Gallery,
Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Toolbar, and
Windows Live Family Safety?) when you installed Windows Live Messenger?

Yes, the others should NOT have been pre-checked but you've gotta pay
attention when you're installing anything.

Dear C
Thanks for your response to my posting.
Outlook Express > Menu Bar > Tools > Options > General
Outlook Express is already the default Mail (and news) handler
so it does perform these functions

what I am doing is attempting to open files from the general file system
(windows explorer) which I have previously saved there

Dear PA Bear
Thanks for responding to my posting.
However, you will know that's it's not helpful.
It's not, quite honestly, the sort of response I would have expected form a
MS MVP.
I think it's simply arrogant and ill mannered.
I think if you take the trouble to mimic the installation process I went
through it's not at all obvious that it's going to produce the result I have
experienced.

Ok - got it!
c:\program files\Windows Live\ Installer
there's an exe programme called wlarp.exe
double click it and it provides the facility to uninstall componants you
don't really want.

Works well - also removes settings it made to your firewall (without telling
you!) when you do a restart after uninstall

AND .eml files will now open in OutlookExpress fine (as before)

Thaks again fro responding to my posting C
Not sure what IE says - I grappled about and got AN answer eventually

I've added it to the end of the posting here [esentially - found the
uninstall programme in prg files\windows live \ . . . ]
I'd hestiated to use uninstall in Contraol Panel because it wasn't at all
clear what it was gong to do]

[crosspost to OE General and, for good measure, Windows Live Mail &
Messenger newsgroups]

I have gone through the Windows Live Essentials installation process many,
many times and every time I've done so, all of the Windows Live applications
have been pre-checked (pre-selected) and I had to uncheck (de-select) the
ones I didn't want to install.

Do I condone the Windows Live team for making them all pre-checked by
default? Most certainly not, nor should you have to uncheck the option to
install Google or MSN toolbar when you're installing Flash Player or Sun
Java Runtimes updates.

To correct the behavior, you'll have to reassert Outlook Express as the
default Mail Client in (1) Set Program Access and Defaults, (2) IE Tools |
Internet Options | Programs, *and* in (3) OE Tools | Options | General |
Default Messaing Programs.

After doing so, uninstall Windows Live Mail (and Windows Live Photo Gallery,
and Windows Live Movie Maker, and Windows Live Writer, and Windows Live
Toolbar, and Windows Live Family Safety) via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

If you wanna bitch about it (and you should IMHO), do so via
