got the following message when applying the "Microsoft
Modem Driver Version 8.28.0.0
" driver update:

"windows - license violation
windows has detected tampering with your registration
product type. this is a violation of your software
license,...product type is not permitted. [ OK ]"

at end it tells me update was successful...

any comments from anyone? is my system OK? i have
receipts for everything....

Your machine is ok, just a software type issue. I don't know the answer to
that one.

This suggests that you have got hold of one of the grey market, illicit
types of XP CD that is 'cracked' to evade the product activation.
Microsoft are certainly taking some steps at Update to identify these
and either refuse updates or undo the cracks (in which case expect it to
start asking to be activated)
