Windows labels DVD Writer as "CD Drive"

Starting today, windows XP SP2 is showing my Benq DVD drive as a "CD
Drive" in My Computer. The drive seems to work just fine (reads CDs
and DVDs) but the label is wrong. I have tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the drive but it still says that it is a CD Drive. How
can I fix this? Thanks.

I checked out that site and it opens a script to change the drive name.
While this might solve the problem, it doesn't help me understand
how/why this happened to begin with. Shouldn't windows keep the naming
consistent by itself?

No, it's common for Windows to call any dvd/cd drive a "cd drive." It really
is a cd drive as well as a dvd drive and if there is no dvd in the drive, it
assumes it's a cd drive.

What I don't understand is why, until today, Windows labeled the drive
as a DVD RW and today it says cd drive. How can this get changed and
why?

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31,
Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41

To resolve your issue, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need
to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.
7. Restart your computer.

This would be connected to what the BIOS reads from the firmware on
the drive.
In the CMOS setup Utility mine reads:
IDE Channel 0 Master [Pioneer DVD-ROM ATAP]
In XP Pro Device Manager:
PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-117
In Windows Explorer:
DVD Drive (D:)
With Disk inserted:
WINXPSP2 (D:)

if the Shell Hardware Detection service is disabled then the drive will
not show up in explorer as a DVD Drive, but as a generic CD Drive. It
will still work just fine tho.
