Windows Internet Explorer invokes ad pop up when opening

when I click on Internet explorer I get a bubble message on the status bar
telling me that I have received an advertisement from "Uptown Media" and sure
enough on the page behind my default opening Internet page is a page
displaying and advertisement - usually for finance related products and other
more intimate offerings. Can anyone advise how I get rid of this unwanted
intrusion. I did download iTunes the other day and now thinking that that was
the culprit I have uninstalled it but the "Uptown Media" message still keeps
coming. Any ideas please. - spiderwebb

iTunes installs a Browser Helper Object (BHO)

I would like to know the name of the process that gives you these popups.
Once we have identified that we can then help you remove these popups

Another thing you can do is install Spybot S & D (totally free):

Homepage:

Direct Download:

This will help you get rid of this popup. Its not 100% perfect in standard
mode whereas Advanced will help you further
