Windows Installer

I have run into a problem with Windows Installer. It isn't something that
occurs every time I use it, but it seems to be happening with increasing
frequency.
Today I went to the widows update site since I received a notification from
my update scanner that a couple of windows applications were out of date. The
first was for Windows Word Viewer and the second was for Windows PowerPoint
Viewer. The first downloaded just fine, but the second one would not even
commence the installation. This has happened previously and it is necessary
to shutdown my computer and do a cold boot. If not, and I attempt to carry
out anymore updates, such as for my Office XP, I get a message telling me
that Windows is already installing an application. A reboot will not
eliminate the problem; only a cold boot.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I can usually count on someone
with all the arcane Vista knowledge to have a solution to these glitches.
Best regards
