Windows Installer

I get install error code 1406 when attempting to install Adobe Reader. This
is an error code for inability to write to the Registry. I was advised to
check the version of my Windows Installer which plays a role in installing
software. It turns out that my PC has two versions of Windows Installer.
One is MSI.DLL version 3.0.3790.2180 located in C:\I386. The other version
is msi.dll version 3.1.4000.2435 located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. I wonder if
a conflict exists. Why are there two of them?

I use my XP Professional SP2 as a single user. I am logged in as the
administrator. There should be no permissions restrictions and I don't see
anything to configure under account configuration for administrator. I
believe Adobe has a bug in its install script and the lack of sufficient
testing on their part is causng this condition to surface. I am not alone.
Many others have encountered this problem.

Could it be that Adobe software is picking up the wrong windows installer?
Maybe Adobe is using a hard coded path.

It was updated. The original wouldd be the one in ./i386/.

The ability to write to the registry is probably a permissions error. The
user probably doesn't have the rights needed to install the reader.
