Windows Installer

Hello everyone,

I was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction with
this problem I am having. When trying to install a program that uses
the Windows Installer, such as Symantec Corp AV10, I get an error
message that reads:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. The can occur if
you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is
not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for
assistance."

I checked the Event Viewer and I see the following warning for
MsiInstaller:

Failed to connect to server. Error: 0xC0000005

I have tried to unregister and reregister the service with no luck. I
attempted to do a System Restore, but it failed, so I slaved the drive
on another comp and replaced the User, System, Sam, Software, and
Default registry files from a System Restore snapshot from a time when
the installer worked, but still nothing. Any suggestions?

Did you check to see if the Windows Installer Service is started
(SERVICES.MSC)?
What is your version of msiexec.exe?

The service was set to manually start, but starting it didnt seem to
make a difference. The installer is version 3.1.

If you can install Microsoft Updates and patches, then I would contact
Symantec and check there forums to see if anyone else has reported the
problem.
