Windows Installer will not go away

After I did the most recent windows update, this problem started. I have
posted in the MS word discussion, but thought i'd post it here also, since it
might be more of a Windows problem.

Whenever I open Word, the windows installer pops up. I hit cancel, and it
takes a really long time to cancel. Sometimes I have to go into task manager
and end the process. When the installer is ended, Word does open up fine.

I have scanned for viruses and spyware. I have run Detect & Repair. None
of them found anything or fixed it.

What is causing this? How do I find out what it wants to install? Please
help me make it go away.

Try; uninstall office, restart, reinstall office, then office updates.

Sometimes this happens if one of the installer files under
C:\Windows\System32\Installer\*ms[ip] is corrupted or missing.

How long do you wait before you decide to kill it?
Have you tried to let it run it's course.

What Office are you using .... Office XP or Office 2000. If it's Office
2000, which I have, the time is basically forever depending on the speed of
you system and what needs to be installed.

Running Detect & Repair, will only Detect and Repair what is installed.
Until what needs to be installed is installed, the Installer will continue
to run.

I believe it needs to run it's course to build some 'knowledge database'
that indicates that it was run and everything is installed.

If any patches are installed that have not been incorporated, this could
also cause this.

You can try, uninstall, reboot, reinstall ... but I would add the following:

1. Uninstall through Add/Remove
2. Remove installation folder, this will cause anything in the registry
pointing to leftovers to show as errors.
3. Run a registry clean program (e.g., CCleaner to remove Office leftovers
.... and there are plenty).
4. Reboot
5. Install Office and choose Custom
6. Select what you want, watch out for Install on First Use options on a
lot of Office Components
