windows installer service

The windows installer server has been very erratic in services.msc. When I
try to stop it, it hangs and I have to reboot. I am trying to install the
Norton client on this server and without the windows installer service
running I cant. I did get it to start and run upon a reboot but then it trys
to stop itself. Can I update the program to a more recent version of the
windows installer? And if so can I go over the top?

Erratic in what way? The service should be 'Manual' start and will be
started when required. Are you sure the problem isn't what's in the yellow
box?

Some time ago I suffered lots of problems with the Windows
Installer. Microsoft was kind enough to guide me through removing
the version I had running and installing the latest. I believe I went
to version 3.2 . This is not easy and removing the old version
involved running a special program they had written just for the
purpose. Look around on Microsoft.com .
