Windows Installer reinstalls HP PSC 2500 at startup

I'm running XP home with all current service packs. Recently Windows installer began reinstalling the HP PSC 2500 printer at startup and anytime a cd or dvd is loaded into the PC. It also runs when a USB device is attached our a memory card is inserted in the card reader. This just started happening after workng find for several months. Any suggestions on how to fix and why this is happening?

Disconnect the printer, then remove it from the Control Panel >
Printers and Faxes. Next scan the Registry for the name of the printer
and/or its manufacturer to delete all leftovers that still point to
that device. Shutdown Windows, reconnect the printer and then boot
your computer to reinstall the hardware.
