Windows Installer not Accessible

Bruce

After completing the reccommended Windows Updates
installer would no longer function.
error message:"The Windows Installer Service could not be
accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in
safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

I was not in Safe Mode and this did not occur until after
I had completed the Windows Updates.

I tried downloading the Windows Installer v2.0 but it
would not install. I got the message that this service
already existed. But, of course, it doesn't work.

I get the same message. I have had problems for the past
couple of weeks. The latest happened when I attempted to
install Quicken's latest software. It aborted with a MSI
problem. Tried everything. Just loaded win2k sp4 still
same problem.

Exact same problem on my side - went through same
procedure with the same failed result.

Additionally, rebooted in Command Prompt Safe Mode, which
allowed me to manually manipulate MSI.DLL and MSIEXEC.EXE -
backed these up and replaced them with the original ones,
from before installing SP4. This still didnt change
anything.

Can anyone offer a resolution for this, as its preventing
me from installing A LOT of third-party software, even as
basic as Adobe Acrobat 6.

Is this an inherit SP4 problem?

Thanks.

try manually reregistering msi.dll

dont know if it will help but perhaps something has
damaged registration.
