Windows Installer Error Message

I am trying to install an application onto a windows 2000
pc.
The error message I am getting is
"This installation package could not be opened. Contact
the application vendor to verify that this is a valid
windows installer package."

From what I have read this error can be caused by a
number of reasons.
1. Having a corrupt installation package.
2. Having some trace of a previous install in the
registry which needs to be removed.

I have tried installing this application on a number of
machines on the network:
Pc's running XP - no problems
2000 - mixed success - some work and some don't
2000 Server (I have only tried 1) - Same error

So from this I don't understand how it could be a corrupt
installation if it works on some computers.

As for the second point relating to a previous install, I
have only just received the application and have not
installed it before.

I contacted the publisher of the application and their
suggestion was to update the windows installer. I
downloaded the current version from the microsoft website
v. 2 but I already had this version installed.

Can anyone offer any suggestions????

1) What Service pack do you have on your Win2k machines?
2) try making a log file to see if we can find more info: run

setup.msi /l*v c:\logfile.txt
