Windows installer error 997

The following is the text of a message I posted in the MSI groups
without any success. Is there anyone here that can help?

I have just started experiencing a problem where the windows installer
service will not start. It reports error 997: Overlapped I/O operation
is in progress.

I have NO Backup, Anti Virus or Firewall on this PC and all the KB
articles I could find talk about Backup and AV software causing a
problem. The hosts file does not contain any odd entries, but something
appears to be causing a problem on port 335? if what I have read is even
close to the mark. I re downloaded the redistributable and it installed
fine, but no joy installing any other software.

Could someone please tell me how to make the installer play like a good
kiddie again :)

Try locating the Installer Cleanup program on Microsoft.com . Then
reinstall the latest version of the Installer. That's what the had me
do about a year ago and I didn't even have to pay for the call.
