Windows Installer 3.1

-Just did a clean install of Windows XP Pro. – 2. Downloaded 99 updates but
none will install.

First update on the list is Windows Installer 3.1. ( KB893803) When I look
at “Add/Remove programs, Windows Installer 3.1 is listed, but in the “Sizeâ€
column on the right hand side, no size is shown.

Question: How can I tell for sure if this thing is actually installed?
Shouldn’t everything that’s installed show something in the “Size†Column?

Any help here will be appreciated.

Left ppaneYes the size don't show.
To check status of your updates:
Control Panel > Security Center > Left pane click "Check for the latest
updates from Windows Update > Left Pane Click "Review your update history".
Instructions are availble there for updates that failed to install.

Thank you Rey Santos for your reply.

These installation trouble shooting guides all tell me the first thing I
need to do is to download and install “Windows Installer 3.1.â€

Now this thing downloads just fine, but when I attempt to install it, I get
a message “Installation Failed.†This does not appear to be an error message
and there is no error number associated with it, it’s just an informative
notice.

When I check “Add/Remove Programs†Windows Installer 3.1 is listed. This
indicates to me that it is installed. But since it has no size on the disk,
this indicates to me that it is not installed.

So let me rephrase my question: How can I determine with absolute certainty
that this thing is installed and is operational?

Hello,Try installing an update if it installs you know it is ok.
On this unit the following is listed, Windows Installer 3.1 (kb893803), no
size listed.
Been installed since the 3.1 installer was issued. No problems.
Wish you well with the downloading.
take care.

-Thank you Joan Archer. I think you deserve credit for this one. I followed
your suggestion and went to: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

I tried method 1: “Register the Wups2.dll File in Windows†It was quick and
easy. I did wonder where I would find all those downloaded updates and how I
would get them to install, but again no problem.

When I turned off my computer, automatic updates started itself back up and
this time all 99 updates were installed in just a few minutes.

Thanks again Joan and I thank everybody who offered suggestions.

P.S. I assume from this that Windows Installer is indeed installed and
working, but Add/Remove Programs still don’t show it as occupying any
space on a drive.
