Is it possible to install Windows XP Home over a Windows XP Pro install?
And, also, can a Windows 2000 Professional system be upgraded to Windows XP
Home edition? I think it can as I recall upgrading to XP home from Win2k.

Installing XP Home over XP Pro is a downgrade and cannot be done. You would need to remove XP Home and then install XP Pro as a clean install. W2K does not Upgrade to XP Home. It will Upgrade to XP Pro though.

Both are considered as downgrading which cannot be done,

Unfortunately, no to both, those are downgrades. The only way to go to XP
Home from either XP Pro or Windows 2000 is with a clean install.

Yes of course that message appeared because you can't upgrade XP Pro to
Home, that is a downgrade.
