Group Policy Editor

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition. I was trying to get into the "Group
Policy Editor"; however; I found out that it is not included in the
"Home" Edition. Is there a equivalent in Xp Home? If not; is there a
work around? If not; is it possible to install XP Professional over top
Xp Home?

1. No, the Group Policy Editor is not included in XP Home.

2. There is no equivalent but many changes can be made manually in the
registry. What do you want to do?

3. Yes, you can install XP Pro as an upgrade over XP Home. Make sure you
have backed up your data first as a precaution.

Hi Theslaz,

You could try this:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_securityconsole.htm

A lot of items can be set using it.

Theslaz,

If you know the registry keys you need to manipulate then you can just
create those. It's a workaround but a dangerous one if you don't know the
registry

What type of thing did you have in mind?

Been getting shitty download speeds with my Telus DSL connection.
Someone suggested to try this:

_____________________________________________________________

Increase your Bandwidth by 20%
Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth! Get it back

A nice little tweak for XP. M*crosoft reserve 20% of your available
bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating
your machine etc..)

Here’s how to get it back:

Click Start–>Run–>type “gpedit.msc” without the ”

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy–>Computer Configuration–>Administrative
Templates–>Network–>QOS Packet Scheduler–>Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not
configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab :

“By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the
bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the
default.”

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.
This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
works on XP Pro, and 2000
other OS not tested.

Note: Do not limit it to 0%, It cuts your speed, Suggest 1-2% only.

I haven't had good luck with these so called "Tweaks" in the past and
probably won't even try it. Just curious why XP Home would not have the
"Group Policy Editor" included?
