Windows Installation problem: Help

When I try to installl Adobe Acrobat 6.01, it went thru file download
etc ..
then I got a pop-up:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. this can occur
if you are running Windows in safe mode (which I am not), or if the
Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support
....."

This is only an example. I have lots of other installation errors when
installing other software/patches, all related to Win Installer.

Apparently, my Windows Installer component is not healthy. How do I
reload that component? What should I look for? (went to the microsoft
site, but don't know what to look for.

I try to re-install from the the install disk, but my laptop's CDrom
drive is broken (can't open it. I dropped the laptop on the ground a
few months ago).
How do I tell the OS to use an external CD drive as the default?

Win 2000 Pro, Service Pack 4

Thanks in advance

Hi

Try the methods one by one outlined here to fix Windows Installer problems in
Win2k and NT4:

PRB: Incorrect Default DCOM Settings Cause Windows Installer to Stop Responding

After running through the four steps in the URL above, also try
this from Start/Run:

msiexec /regserver

If that doesn't solve your problem, and you have MSI 2.0 installed, downgrade
to version 1.1 (somewhat messy), and then install MSI 2.0 again:
