Windows installation issues file copy error

I have serious troubles.

I bought a new harddisk since I got problems with downloaded files, I
couldn't install software which i downloaded. Got CRC errors and such.

This was an IDE harddiskdrive. A now have installed a S-ATA drive from WD
(74GB 10000RPMs) Troubles started during installation. Files would copy,
different files each time. I got reports that the Windows XP image wasn't
correct. I tried different CD-drives, and even different Windows CDs. (I
have one Home and one Pro OEM disk, also borrowed one from a friend just to
test)

Now a last attempt got Windows up and running (with only one file copy
error, and i don't remeber which file this was). I have got Windows updated
to SP2 after many attempts. Now the problem is the following:

I downloaded md5sums.exe to test the md5 hash of downloaded files, and
compare against the given hash on the download site. small programs like
putty.exe are correct when downloaded.

Now i tried to download Mediaplayer 10 which are 12,1 MB. Two downloads
gives different hash sums:

8188 2f34 ed38 bf38 ea3f 0fca 7c57 7f22
1dfd 4d22 db3e 38a0 0f55 d025 1bf1 f92b

The second one crashes: Could not extract file. Probable cause is memory
shortage or a damage CAB-file

The first one looks ok.

Anyone have any idea? Defect hdd-controller? Defect motherboard?

I have had enormous problems with getting any decent graphicscard to work in
this machine. And I have previously upgraded the PSU to a 300W Shuttle
(PC50).

This is a Shuttle ST61G4 barebone.

Guess I just have to buy a new computer (which is long overdue anyways)

Have you tested the memory? If multiple memory sticks remove all but
one and try it with each one alone. Also use these programs to test the
memory. Let it run for awhile, not just a single pass and use both.
