I am getting frequent errors (several times a day) where I get a
message that Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close.
This is usually when running Internet Explorer. Now it is also
happening with Outlook. There seem to be two files involved,
comctl32.dll, and wininet.dll. These are shown as the Modname.

I have looked through the Microsoft knowledge base and don't find
anything that really helps. I have also run the System File Checker,
but it didn't find anything wrong with the protected files. My
spyware and antivirus programs are all up to date.

Windows XP Pro 2002, SP2
Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519
Outlook 2002 (10.6515.6735) SP3

Try going into msconfig selective startup turn off startup items on top right
of screen reboot pc then try again if it fails go back to Start Run type
msconfig click ok the system configuration screen will come up. put check
back into Normal startup reboot pc you will be back to way you were.

If this resolves issue then somthing in msconfig under startup is
interfering you may have to select one at a time until you see what is
causing problem and leave it unchecked.

Good Luck

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Report in the System and
Application for the 48 hours and post copies. No Information Reports please.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

That is not a very scientific approach given that you are ignoring
evidence giving information about the error on the computer.

Thanks Gerry -

Yes, I am still having IE errors since I ran the SFC.

I will do a reboot and watch Outlook for more errors.

Thanks, Dick
