I have WindowsXP1, IE6. For some reason when I am on the internet my
computer will freeze up. It's as if no power is going through at all. The
mouse and keyboard don't work. The only way to get it working again is
turning the power off and then on.

It freezes at odd times. When I am on a page and just scrolling with my
mouse When a picture is downloading on the page being displayed. It also
does this when I try scanning with my virus software-Norton. On Norton it
freezes up at common files, .txt, .exe, and .jpg. The last time I was able
to scan for viruses was Sept. 16 of this year.

The hard drive was replaced and programs reinstalled. Whgen I had the first
hard drive, it was freezing up. So, I tried XP2 just to see-still froze up.
So, the hard drive was replaced. Again, no luck.

Oh and another thing. When I start up my computer, my history is wiped out.
Pages I've been to previously are not highlighted. OH, and I did replace my
mouse and keyboard thinking that was the problem.

Can anyone figure this out? Help!!

I've been having the same problem, and apparently so have other people.
Please check out my posts on Freezing, Hanging" before you do anything
drastic. And please do let me know if and how you solve the problem.

Hi--It took me awhile, but I found your posts. I use OE and it was on the
web. Your information is really helpful.

I'm leaving it up to my husband to check this out. He built the computer and
has time on his hands.

But, I did notice something very interesting between the both of us. You
have Seti at Home as a screensaver. I have the Google Earth (Keyhole) that
I check occasionally. Now, I'm wondering if this also has something to do
with it. I just can't remember if the freezing started before or after I
installed Google Earth.

Will keep you posted. Again, thank you.

Shawn--Here it goes thus far--

My husband took the side panel off the hard drive, cleaned out the dust and
dander with a can of air. From this, the following was done-
He took a table fan and faced it towards the opend unit. Then he
successfully scanned Norton three times without freezing up.

He was also able to fully scan with the memory diagnostic tool as suggested
previously. I didn't realize that when this was originally done, the scan
was also locking up.
There were no errors when the scan was done. That test passed.

It was determined that zone 2 was hot. When the unit was closed up and
Norton rescanned without the table fan helping, it again locked up.

So, he is going to put another fan inside the unit as the next step. That
will be tomorrow as he has to go and buy one. I will let you know then. (I
hope this makes sense, as I
am not quite awake and am still drinking my coffee)

Since it's a cooling issue, you should use a utility like Mother Board
Monitor to check
you cpu temp and fan speeds. You cpu fan could be on its last leg.

I have an amd xp 2200+ w/ fan
A 450watt power supply w/ fan
1 Case fan
1 add-in fan in a pci slot

My cpu fan runs at 4000+ rpm's and is considered to be a tad slow
My cpu's temp is usually around 45C/111F and is considered to be a tad hot.
