Windows Firewall turned off

My Windows Firewall automatically turns off every time i reboot. Is this
because Norton Antivirus has its own internal firewall? If it is because of
Norton, is it ok to leave the Windows Firewall turned off? I'm concerned that
my computer isn't adequately secured. Thanks

I ran services.msc and Windows Firewall/ICS was already started and

firewall still wasn't enabled. you mentioned other services...

Did you turn off Norton Worm Protection from within the Norton program? This
will reset the firewall settings to allow you to set it yourself. If you
have then check the following.

Run the services.msc again. Make sure Network Connections is set to Manual
and Log on is set to Local System account with a tick beside Allow service
to interact with desktop, Make sure Windows Management Instrumentation is
set to Automatic and Log on is set to Local System account. Make sure
Windows Firewall/ICS logon is set to Local System account.

If none of the above works you need to look deeper. The following article
explains many of the ways to configure the firewall. In particular check out
the section on group policy and the netsh firewall options.

Hi.. I have the same problem but am unable to figure out how to turn this
off. Where I go to "worm protection" all the options are greyed out saying
it has been updated to work with my Norton Firewall.

It sounds like you have more than just Norton Anti-virus installed. If you
have Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall installed then you
already have a firewall and do not need to use the Windows firewall.

i ticked "Allow service to interact with desktop" and restarted the machine,
and the firewall was still disabled. that article didn't really help each
other. if you have any other suggestions please let me know because i would
much rather use the Windows firewall rather than Norton's, but i guess i will
for now. thank you so much for all of your help.

I re-read all your posts and I'm confused. Do you have Norton Internet
Security or Norton Antivirus? If it is Norton Intenet Security then that has
a built in firewall that replaces the Windows firewall. If it is Norton
Antivirus then it has built in worm protection which I don't think works as
well as the Windows firewall.

Oh I'm sorry, I have Norton Internet Security. I was just wondering if there
was a way i could use Windows firewall instead, but I guess I don't need it.
The Norton firewall is now turned on. One more thing, though...when i
switched the service: Network connections Log on to "interact with desktop",
what exactly does that mean? thanks

I think it is to allow the networking service to update icons on the desktop
as their status changes. It shouldn't affect the firewall but it is the
default to have it on. Norton may not need it and may have turned it off. It
shouldn't affect how the network works just how messages and icons are
displayed. More important was the account the service was set to run under.

I am also having great diificulties with having to reset Windows Firewall on
both my PC and laptop every time I start up. The problem I have, is that I
have the 2 computers wirelessly connected and they will only connect with the
Windows firewall turned on. I have turned the firewall in NIS 2005 off, as
after reinstalling everything on my PC, tried for nearly a week to get the
network working with Norton as the operative firewall. It worked fine before
but refuses to work now. I have been through all the posts and done
everything suggested to no avail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Did anyone ever figure out this problem. I have the same problem. I've been
through every possible contingency and stil every time I reboot, the firewall
turns off. I don't have norton. I thought maybe someone hacked into my
computer and did something to make it turn off to decrease security. Any help
is appreciated.

I have the same problem as tman2o. I do have Norton Internet Security but its
firewall is turned off. I tried your suggestion below but the firewall still
got turned off when I rebooted the pc :-(

If you have Norton Antivirus, and not Norton Internet Security, then
there is no firewall included. Is XP SP2 installed ?

If yes, then try this ... go to Start, Run, type in :

cmd

Click OK

At the command prompt type in :

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter

Restart the system. Is the Windows firewall enabled on reboot ?
