Norton AntiVirus rec. Turn Off Windows Firewall

S

SusanJ03

I installed Norton AntiVirus 2005 which recommended I
turn off Windows SP2 firewall...which I did (seems Norton
has their own built in...) The Windows Security window
shows their firewall ON but when I go in...it appears to
be OFF...hope this is correct...DO others find the same
to be true with SP2 and Norton AntiViru 2005 installed???
Thanks.

I have NAV 2005 too.

In my security center i can read this under Firewall :

"Norton Internet Worm Protection is ON. A firewall helps protect your
computer against viruses and other threats."

Symantec has made an alternative to SP2 firewall. I have choosed to disable
the built in firewall. All settings/options for windows firewall and much
more is available via NAV program now. Seems to work just fine.

Hope this helps

IF norton antivirus 2005 had/has a built in firewall then why would they
still sell their personal firewall 2005?
It is a worm blocker, not a firewall.

No, you are very wrong. NAV 2005 has a brand new wormb blocking engine that
replaces windows firewall. Just like windows firewall the worm blocking
engine in NAV 2005 monitors and blocks all inbound traffic as default.

A reall firewall (third party like Norton Personal fireweall) monitors both
inbound and outbound traffic. I don't need that and anyone that needs that
should not use neither Windows firewall or the NAV 2005 worm blocker alone.

Quote from Symantec:
Norton Internet Worm Protection is a firewall that protects your computer
from incoming Internet traffic. If you have a program that receives data
from the Internet, then by default, Internet Worm Protection blocks the
incoming traffic, unless you create a rule to allow the program.
