My windows XP home edition service pack two will not start the firewall
(Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
service on local computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed
to start.

I have looked at several of the post but none have this error. I even
looked on the knowledge base.

There are only two possibities :

1) You have another software firewall installed /or security product with
firewall protection/ . Goto Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs
and see if you have one . The most popular are Symantec/Norton , McAfee ,
Panda,Kaspersky , Kerio , Outpost , ZoneAlarm ......
If you have that's the reason and if so , no need to worry about this

2) You have malicious software (viruses/spyware)
Attention !!! You need to clean the infection . Scan and clean with
reputable tools . See my web-page and perform the "Check for and eliminate"
instructions

Suggest you utilize sfc /scannow to restore system files that may have
been damaged/corrupted :

http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

The article covers all of the possible scenarios in order to
successfully run the System File Checker.

Has the system been scanned for the presence of malware ?
If not, suggest you show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Then read this tutorial :
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=15574&sid=beab01a1209071ca224480cc6a0ca428
Next, have the system scanned by Kaspersky's Online Scanner :
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

IF no malware is present, then you can attempt to reset the Firewall by
going to Start, Run, and typing in

cmd
Click OK

At the Command Prompt, type this in, and the press Enter :

netsh firewall reset

Type exit, then restart the system.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, use the Registry Editor to check
these registry keys ( go to Start, Run, type in
regedit
Click OK )

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

See if there is a listing of WindowsFirewall under the Microsoft
folder. Also, click on the Microsoft folder to see if it's listed under
Name in the right frame.

If WindowsFirewall is listed, please post back with the Data listed in
the right frame. ( It will be 0 or 1 )

Check this key also :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile

In the right frame, under Name, check the Data for EnableFirewall.
It should be listed as 1, for Enabled.
Also, check the DomainProfile while your checking the above
StandardProfile for an EnableFirewall entry under Name.
