All,

I have been getting the above error message and I don't
know how to sort it.

The error message reads:
Files that are required for windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognised versions. To maintain
windows must retore.

I have tun the correct version on numerous occasions but
still it appears.

PLEASE HELP!!

Hi Gordon,

Run an up to date antivirus scan lately? That message could be an indication
of infection.

Otherwise, start/run 'sfc /scannow' and have your WinXP CD handy.

You get this message at the time it happens. So 1 sec before you saw it a
file operation took place involving a protected file name. It DOES NOT mean
an unrecognised version has been installed. You will get this if you copy
the exact file over. It only checks the filename and replaces whatever is
there with a backup copy.

You see the dialog if a/you are an admin and b/ XP can't find the backup
files or the XP CD.

If B is not true it is always replaced silently. If A is not true and B is
true then no replacement occurs.

The question to ask is what is doing file operations on these protected
filenames.

Or what filenames does it want to replace.

Note the equiv manual command does check files but the auto one only check
names.

Gordon,

Just insert the XP CD and the process will continue automatically.

==Notes==

Windows XP supports Windows File Protection (WFP), which prevents programs
from replacing critical Windows system files. Programs must not overwrite
these files because they are used by the operating system and by other
programs. Protecting these files prevents problems with programs and the
operating system.

WFP determines which file was changed. If the file is protected, WFP looks
up the file signature in a catalog file to determine if the new file is the
correct version. If the file is not the correct version, WFP replaces the
new file with the file from the cache folder (if it is in the cache folder)
or from the installation source. WFP searches for the correct file in the
following locations, in this order:
1.. The cache folder (by default, %systemroot%\system32\dllcache).
2.. The network install path, if the system was installed using network
install.
3.. The Windows CD-ROM, if the system was installed from CD-ROM.

It's the 3rd option which asks you insert the XP CD-ROM to restore the
corrupt system files.
