Hi, i have a problem when i start my computer i get windows splash screen and
then after that this comes up.

windows falied to start. a recent hardware or software change migth be the
cause. to fix the problem :

1. insert yopur windows installation disk and restart your computer.
2. choose your language settings, and then click "next"
3. click "repair your computer"

If you do not have this disk, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for asssistance.

File : windows\system32\drivers\acpi.sys

status : 0xc0000098

info : windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing,
or corrupt.

And i understand all that and i read trough the book and it says i need to
put the windows installation disc, and it tells me to boot up with the disc.
So i go into setup and am about to change boot sequence to the Cd-rom, but
then it say's
Cd-rom (not not installed) so i was wondering how do i get the cd-rom to work.

OK, start your computer, click F8 when you see the first DOS screen with the
white strap filling up and choose

"Start in Safe Mode" (No Internet)

After you get there you may take a look at event viewer, there should be
some errors, do not despair.

Turn off your machine normally, restart again and see if Vista is back.

If the problem persists do it again, this time Safe Mode With Internet. Look
into the event viewer event log for errors. Try to comprehend them. It is
useful.

Turn off your machine, restart again see if Vista is back.

Should everything simple fail, get some error messages from error log and
post them here.

Are you replying to the wrong POST... you make no sense.

He needs to get into CMOS setup by pressing the delete, F2 or some other
key to change the boot order to the CD/DVD.

On some newer systems, pressing F8during boot will bring up a boot options
menu.

I do not think I replied to the wrong post. It is in the same thread as the
OP.

And I do make sense. There is actually a website of long standing that
describes this technique. I sort of adopted it to my situation, went thru a
few options when I was faced with black screen that did not respond to
anything and it worked.

I threw it in for him as an option to consider.

In some way you confirmed what I said, some systems require just one key,
and that key is delete. I said that, I believe.

Can you read ?
You posted to F8 into safe mode , then to look at the event viewer.
That's doesn't sound like a way into the BIOS setup

Open the case and see if the CD-rom connection has come loose.
Maybe a defective CD-rom ?
Have you flashed the bios recently ?
Is this a laptop ?

I don't quite understand your objection. I got into the event viewer in safe
mode I believe just yesterday. I do not see where I goofed up?

Of course, it is not BIOS. but I was not talking about BIOS, I believe. I
never mention BIOS I mentioned BSOD screen. BSOD screen IS different. BSOD
screen has nothing to do with BIOS. I actually called it DOS screen for
simplicity's sake. It is that screen where you see "Safe mode," "Safe Mode
with Internet," etc., etc., etc.

To do BIOS he has to do F2 but I do not think it is a way to revive his
system in his situation.

Of course, you can lay a comprehensive workup before you got into the safe
mode: you can review your hardware configuration, check HDDs for integrity,
etc, etc, etc. Why is all this hassle if a simple restart in safe mode often
solves many problems?

Hi,

Do you have another entry in your BIOS for a DVD-ROM device? If so, then
select that.

If not, then if you are sure that both the IDE and power cables are
connected firmly, and the jumper setting on the DVD-ROM drive is set
correctly, then either the motherboard IDE controller is faulty, or the
DVD-ROM drive is dead.
