Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) does not display hidden files of
folders. Also, when I click on Tools, Options, View, Show Hidden Files, 1) I
cannot see any, and 2) the setting is reset to Do Not Show.. when I reopen
the Tools, Options window.

Hello,

Try Kelly's registry fix at line 155 left column here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If problems still persist, you may also want to do a free spyware
scan/remover by running SuperAntispyware from
http://www.superantispyware.com

Another good scanner and remover is MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings
and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is
checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You
may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make
certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is
not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is
selected and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name,
Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

Hope this helps.
