Problem with view hidden files and folders settings - XP Home

I am having difficulties setting the options to view hidden files and
folders. (XP Home w/SP 2)

In a explorer window I pull down Tools and select Folder options, and
select the View tab.

Under 'hidden files and folders' the radio buttons for 'Do not show
hidden files and folders' and 'Show hidden files and folders' are BOTH
selected.

I can select one or the other and apply, and 'apply to all folders',
but when I exit and return to the View tab, both are again selected.

Virus and trojan checks have been performed with multiple vendors
products (for both virus and trojan checkers) with no substantial
results.

I was able to locate the registry settings for the options but decided
against attempting to set or reset one or the other as I'm not sure of
the proper settings.

Any and all thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Thanks!

Forgot to include:

Option to 'Hide protected operating system files (recommended)' is NOT
checked.

Thanks!

Folder Options | View tab | Advanced settings

The settings are in this key...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Show Hidden Folders and Files uses Hidden.

Value Name: Hidden
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 1 or 2
1 = show hidden
2 = do not show

Hidden should NOT be set to 0, as far as I know.

Display the contents of system folders uses ShowSuperHidden.

Value Name: ShowSuperHidden
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Hide Files
1 = Show Files

If something is missing from this key, it can mess up Folder Options...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder

Folder Options Empty or Missing Items

Go here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top.
368. Folder Options/View Empty - Restore Now

viewfolderrestore.reg is the file that you want.

You probably have an item missing from...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder

viewfolderrestore.reg should repair it.

You may have to reboot.

These two keys may also exist...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\SuperHidden

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\SuperHidden\
Policy\DontShowSuperHidden

Hope this helps. Let us know.
