Folder Option re: Show Hidden Files & Folders

I am running XP on a Toshiba and use Norton Internet Security 2008. I had set
it to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" in Folder Options, in Control Panel.
Inexplicably, that setting changed by itself and, now, when I manuall click
on "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and then "Apply", the change does not
happen and I cannot view some my folders. Moreover, my system will not allow
itself to be restored to an earlier point in time under System Restore.

I need advice how I can get "Show Hidden Files and Folders" working again!
