Windows explorer

I downloaded a file and the site tells me that it was saved to ...temporary
internet files\.... When I go into windows explorer it doesn't show a folder
called 'temporary internet files' I've ticked the box 'show hidden files'. I
know that there is such a folder and there are lots of files in it as I saw
them during the download process.
How can I find the files. Tried the search option w/o success.

Why not just save the file to your desktop so you don't have to go hunting
for it?

Open your version of Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet
Options > General tab, then find buttons that say Settings - View
Files. Can't be more specific when you don't say what version of
Internet Explorer you have.

G

Graham

sorry should have said - using ie7.
Tried search under temp it finds the temp folder but not the temporary
internet files folder.
need to find the file to move it to desktop

Yes I can see the files in that folder now (and have deleted them all) but
why can't I see that folder in Windows explorer?

L

Leonard Grey

It's inside a hidden folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<account name>\Local Settings

Leave the file where it is.
Either save your downloaded files to the Desktop(you don't need a folder
there to do that), or make a folder in My Documents, and save downloads there.

A moot point now - if you've deleted all the files in your Temporary
Internet Files folder, there's nothing to move!

But, if you've gone into Windows Explorer's

Tools > Folder Options > View tab > Hidden files and folder > Show hidden
files and folders > Apply > Apply to all folders

and confirmed "Yes" at the prompt, then I know no reason why you shouldn't
be able to browse with Windows Explorer to see the contents of

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

unless there's some sort of restriction imposed by your place of work or a
legacy policy from your PC's previous owner. How far down are you able to
drill when browsing in this way?

G

Graham

no can't see it. Already did as you suggest -show hidden files/folders/apply
to all folders but it doesn't see the temp internet files folder only temp.
Have looked, and deleted contents using tools/options etc but that only
deletes contents yes? Pc is mine since build and install win XP

The TIF area could have been repointed to a different folder, but I'd've
thought you'd know if you've done that. Perhaps another user, family member,
etc. Have a look at:

Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab > Browsing history | Settings
Current location

and see what it says there. Is that exactly the same place as you've been
looking with Windows Explorer? (By default,

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files)

Only other thing I can think of is looking in

C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Temp

and (more likely)

C:\Windows\Temp

for a TIF folder. Actually go into each "Temp" folder; there isn't always a
[+] displayed in the left-hand pane of Windows Explorer even when there
*is* a sub-folder.

Looked in control panel etc - exactly the same as default but in win Explorer
its not there. Did a search for *.tif but not found that way either. Looked
in 'temp' folders and not there either. Driving me nuts ;-) Also looked in
command prompt under 'tree'cmd but it doesn't come up there either.....

Saving a downloaded file someplace where you don't have to go hunting for it
*is* a good idea, but in my view the desktop is a poor choice, because it's
so easy to get the file confused with the shortcuts normally kept there. I
recommend creating a \download folder and saving all downloads there.

By "TIF" I meant "Temporary Internet Files" - sorry if the shorthand
confused. If you want to hunt down your T.I.F. folder by searching for image
files (and you have browsed since clearing it down), you'd be better off
searching for GIFs, JPGs and PNGs (and probably with Agent Ransack rather
than XP's built-in search facility which I find inherently untrustworthy).

Beyond that, I'm out of ideas, sorry.
