windows explorer

when I use windows explorer to see the contents of a CD or DVD the system
hangs and then upon return it does not "see" the drive anymore. I cannot
load software or do anything with either drive.
the stats:
1 CD and 1 DVD drive
windows home
athlon 1.2 ghz processor
2 different clean installs and same problem

If you have the problem after doing two clean installs, unless you are
installing incompatible software, I'd suspect hardware. Perhaps when
you try to initialize the drives something shorts out. Are both drives
on the second IDE connector?
